Silk Research in India

Asia is the major producer of silk in the whole world, geographically. Asia manufactures more than 95 percent of the total global output. Even though there are more than 40 countries in the world map of silk, most of the quantity is manufactured in India and China, followed by Japan, Korea and Brazil.

India is the 2nd largest manufacturer of silk and also the largest end user of silk in the entire world. India possesses a very strong culture and tradition that is bound by domestic market of silk.

Mulberry silk is manufactured in states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal and Jammu & Kashmir and non-mulberry silks are manufactured in Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and other states in the north east.

There are various silk research centres present across the country that helps in researching the quality of silk used in producing silk sarees.
