The Ooty botanical garden was laid out back in 1847. The entire area is spread across around 55 acres. This is one of the Tamil Nadu tourist places, which is home to lush and well maintained lawns, various rare tree species which include the cork tree, monkey puzzle tree and the paper bark tree.

In fact, this botanical garden in Ooty is also home to the 20 million year old fossilized tree. The garden also includes an Italian styles well maintained garden which overlooks a clear pool which is surrounded by a wide variety of ferns and bushes, shrubs, various plants which are rare flowering ones and various fern houses which host orchids and rare ferns.

Every year during the month of May this national botanical garden hosts the Summer Festival. This festival manages to attract tourists from all walks of the world and the main crowd pleaser of the event is the flower show which hosts a wide array of rare species of plants. This botanical garden in Tamil Nadu also hosts a Toda show in the Summer Festival where the Todas are a group of natives from the Toda Mund or Hill which is found east of the botanical garden.
